Brilliant Book!

My great friend Tracey has published a fabulous book!

Its packed full of hits and tips, colourful patterns by Tracey and guest designers, and very easy to follow instructions.
The photos are clear and there are charts to accompany some of the techniques.
At the end of each chapter there are examples to inspire you further.
It is suitable for beginners and those who already have some knowledge of crochet too.

What I love most about the book is that the techniques explained act like stepping stones to enable you to create your own designs and projects.
I'm so proud of Tracey and all her creativity and hard work!
I've already used some of the ideas and I know this will be my one-stop reference for a long time to come!

One of the ideas I tried was a raised rib to begin a cuff for some mitts I promised Mr RW a couple of years ago!

The wool (New Lanark Aran in Dark Graphite)  is warm and toasty, it hooked really well and the flecks of colour gave the mitts a bit of zing!

For extra texture I hooked in the back loops!
They have come in useful on some of our more chilly days!

I'd like to have a go at Tunisian crochet which also features in the book - and there's a great tutorial video featuring Tracey here.

In the meantime I have been going round in circles.....but that's another story!

Changing Pages

I have long admired altered books,
the possibilities the book lends to be revised
and the ingenious ideas the creators present to their new readers.
I recently was asked to add to one such beautiful book,
 being transformed by A,
a daughter of my book loving friend.
It has a definition of 'belief' on the front cover.
Beginning as a GCSE project, its wonderful changes continue....
Four textured white pages were offered - ripe for re-fashioning.

Ideas flowed freely before I had even read the beginning of the book, I made sketches and notes, one in CAPITALS - READ A's PAGES!
After being entranced by her personal, detailed and diverse work I realised how many of my original ideas would be right at home alongside, in terms of features and form.
Also, as our styles and talents are different, there would be some novel ideas.
As usual it took a while to cogitate and feel comfortable about starting,
and there was a small amount of gathering and preparation...

but a fabulous February afternoon was spent in a metamorphosing whirl of colourful creativity....once started it was difficult to stop!

 The first page:

A print of two photographs overlapped and merged prior to printing,
the lower from wet felt made in response to the sunsets outside our front window,
the upper - one such sunset...complete with urban street furniture!
The wording is a title of a book by one of my long time favourite authors, Patrick Gale
A's mum and  I are both huge fans and were mesmerised when we met him during a local book event.

Originally this page was intended to be much busier, with more words...
but on reflection less is more in this case!

Page Two:

Four of my original thoughts were felt, holes, colour and crochet.
This page combines all four!
The larger holes were cut with a craft knife, variegated sock wool crocheted into pre-pricked smaller holes, and there is a re-used off-cut wet-felted corner.

This page, in contrast to Page One, needed something extra - whilst tidying up I came across the tiny pile of cut holes, carefully saved, sparkling in the sun.
Turned upside down / over / backwards,
they transformed the page and brought it to life, reminding me again of Brian Wildsmith's illustrations.

Page Three

A potato printed background with acrylic and sparkly paint, the other side of the holes and crochet, and a photograph of the listed fish.

As the holes would impact on each page my original idea was to have a fish on one...little did I know how significant this particular fish would be.
I visited it a few days before making the pages, and rejected a felt fish in its favour.
Having handed the book back I had an excited response from my friend who had actually played on 'her favourite park fish sculpture' as a child and shares my excited fascination for its form and function!

Page Four

Photo montage from 6.9.14 City of Colours  Festival
Images of works by Jimmy C and Jay Sharples.
Spray painted discarded masking tape from Jay Sharples street art.

It should come as no surprise that these images would be included...
vibrant colour and circles....

The textured background of the painted white page reminded me of the white brick walls colourfully sprayed that weekend...

The holes give glimpses to other gems!

The whole process was an honour and privilege, I was so thrilled to be asked to share A's book diversity-fying and I had such a great time celebrating colour and our beautiful city!
I may have a go at my own sometime...

Low-tech Laptops

...for longhand logging!

Its nearly a year since the wonderful stabstitch workshop and here is my dream finally in production!

Some of these pieces of felt have become felty front covered notebooks

A few of the goodies from Beckys giveaway being put to good use!

Back covers of wrapping paper - one of Lu Summers beautiful designs...

stuffed with secret cereal box strengtheners securing sturdiness!

There are little individual surprises in each one applying to the recipient!

Hopefully there will be more in production soon - I have located some better equipment to create the holes...and I have ideas for the remnants and offcuts!
Helen has a comprehensive photo tutorial and lots of other ideas if you'd like to have a stab at a notebook!

Busy.. Busy.. Flop!

Spring has certainly sprung around here - there are beautiful blooms all over the garden, plenty of  magpies and pigeons (and I hope some robins) building nests, clear blue skies and our vehicle's MOT is due...
I have been busying away creating for a bonanza of birthdays, and celebrations until  things reached fever pitch.....(nearly literally) and I flopped!
Since then I have been resting (or trying to...) and the antibiotics are slowly dragging me out of my fuzzy head...I'm even considering picking up my crochet hook again..so until then here's some I prepared earlier:

They are both slightly different!

This string is a full crochet one  made using Sirdar Squiggle yarns

and Lucy at Attic 24s teeny tiny heart and teeny tiny flower patterns,
though with super bulky yarn the teeny tiny bit may be a little unnecessary!

I have made huge progress on the book front!

 Chopping and slicing....

I found a fantastic well used map in a charity shop - it wasn't until I got it home I found its true beauty...it was 2 maps carefully taped together and annotated with red and blue biro. Its folds were also individualised and this has given some interesting edges and sticky out bits in the finished books! (I did chop it up as I thought it must have served its original purpose and then been donated!)

Some finished volumes....

and inner details!...

I have finished the commission and handed it over to my satisfied friend...I will post about it when I know it has been given to its recipients!

Following Tracey's post about her fabulous  gift bags I had a go...
its the first time I followed a longer pattern with lots of rows, holes and a spiral...
I realised where I had gone astray, but wanted to try out the handles so I modified mine into a basket sort of bag! It is unique I admit  -  but I love it, and it will be filled with chocolate goodies soon!

I'll certainly be making more in the future - hopefully they'll look more like Tracey's!

Whilst on the subject!..... Carrad over at Faded Reverie has a fab bag of handmade goodies to  give away to make Spring a bit more colourful...

...and finally here's a teaser of some Easter goodies I am itching to get back to....

I'll be using one of Helen's tried and tested tips on some of the contents!
I also used this one on the bag!

Hope you are all enjoying some of the joys of Spring!!

Booking time to relax and create!

I have long admired Jenny's fabulous creations at love and peas*  she is currently debating whether her beautiful volumes are  journals or books....

I love books! The smell, feel, weight, contents, covers, pages...words,  spaces, fonts...I could go on for reams!
The other Saturday I spent a relaxing and enjoyable afternoon learning a new skill alongside two interesting  and humourous ladies. It was a  stab stitch book binding workshop led by Christina at Fibre Flurry. We had expert tuition, Christina was very patient and informative, and gave us lots of tips and hints from her wide artistic experience. We learned about the Japanese art of binding and folding (so the pages are double) alongside placing leaves in folio.
We were able to use materials from Christina's new plain or colourful paper collection and her bulging boxful of preloved paper - quite a distracting challenge to choose from such an amazing array of pages containing words, music, pictures, destinations, diagrams, lines and notes.
The tricky task requiring concentration was measuring, puncturing holes, and sewing the binding but we had two stabs (haha) at it and were able to make our mistakes in a friendly atmosphere!

We came away with two books, templates to make more of the same size, and a stacks of ideas.

The covers have two sides...

the pattern on the outside and inside..

I included lots of different pages...

Since the workshop I have been browsing charity shops for tatty books to chop into and reuse and reinvigorate! Before shopping I thought it would be easy to slice a book that was not mine..however just trying to choose one was really tricky; all the books were pristine, and by making the choice it meant that I had become attached to the book in question.
I know others have worked through these issues - thanks to Kate for voicing it on her blog and to her daughter Kirsty for the initial inspiration for my paper folding forays !

Today  I had several brilliant finds though, and feel that I can reuse these volumes of music

...just look at all these notes..and (someones) notes!!

Here's some of the beautiful items I have gathered ...

soon to be bound and given away to be used by new readers writers and drawers!!
